Re-Energize Week Day 2: Rise And Shine

When I was in 5th grade, there was a little nursery rhyme we used to sing at the beginning of the week:

Rise, and shine, and give God the glory – glory,

Rise, and shine, and give God the glory – glory,

Children, of the world.

The capitalized line was usually shouted instead of sung, and, as far as any nursery rhymes go, once you get this one stuck in your head, you can’t unstick it.

However, I find that there’s a lot of truth in this rhyme. Rising early in the morning is one of the go-to methods I use to get back on track with my life. Any students out there know the drill – you get into a pattern of going to bed too late, and therefore sleep in, resulting in an even later night, an even later morning…and the cycle has begun.

The past two weeks I didn’t voluntarily choose this daily schedule, but I am glad to break out of it. Getting up early and doing some light yoga, spending mindful time for breakfast, or even just sipping on a nice cup of coffee without haste can work wonders for your day.

Especially those of you who are morning grinches will now flinch and wonder how to deal with getting up early in the morning…and the only answer I have for you is: It’s a habit thing. And that’s what this week is all about: Getting back to those habits (or forming them in the first place) that will get us energized and reload our happiness storages. Why not start by getting up only 5 minutes earlier tomorrow, and then 10 minutes the next?

And, by the way, if you’re wondering what you should have for a “mindful” breakfast, I’ve got a new green smoothie in store for ya:

Hydrating Green Smoothie

  • Servings: 1
  • Print

  • 1 green apple
  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 1 orange
  • 2 dates
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened (soy) yogurt
  • 1 cup water
  • 10 icecubes

1. Blend all the ingredients together, adding as much ice as needed for a smooth texture.

Note: This green smoothie is much more liquid than my others, which is how I wanted it to be. For less “liquidity”, reduce the amount of water.

Staying true to Day 1 of Re-Energize Week, I cut the alcohol and focussed on hydrating like crazy yesterday. This smoothie helped a lot, as it was nice and liquid, and felt a lot more like “juice” than a smoothie. Combined with lemon-infused water, it really helped to get myself back to healthy eating yesterday, as I’m sure it’ll do for you!

Oh, and all you morning grinches: I wrote a post just for you a few weeks back, presenting a 1 week breakfast eating plan. If you’d like a few ideas, go check it out!

And, tomorrow, rise and shine, and give God the glory. 🙂
